Licensure Renewal Information (M.D.'s. D.O.'s, & D.P.M.'s)

For M.D.'s (unrestricted)

Continuing Education (CE/CME) Requirements:

 General Hours- 38 Credits

 Medical Errors-  2 Credits (Course MUST include information regarding the 5 most mis-diagnosed conditions, in accordance with Rule 64B8-13.005, F.A.C. )

 Domestic Violence-   2 Credits (Required every third biennium – Included in the 38 general.) 

 Controlled Substance Prescribing Course- 2 Credits (Required  for medical doctors who are registered with the United States DEA. Must  complete prior to January 31, 2019 and each subsequent renewal. Only certain organizations are allowed to hold this course. The Medical Society will offer this course free to all members. Please contact us for the date.)

First Biennium Renewal: If you are renewing your  license for the first time you are exempt from the general CME  requirement and are only required to complete 2 hours of Preventing  Medical Errors and 1 hour of HIV/AIDS. Rule 64B8-13.005, Florida  Administrative Code, requires the Prevention of Medical Errors course  contain the five most mis-diagnosed medical conditions in Florida for  the previous two years. Currently those conditions are: cancer related  issues; neurological/spine related issues; cardiac/stroke related  issues; infectious/communicable diseases; pulmonary related issues.

For D.O.'s

CE Requirements for Subsequent Renewals:

Florida Laws and Rules/Professional and Medical Ethics-1 Credit (Must be live) 

Prevention of Medical Errors-2 Credits (Must be live)

Prescribing Controlled Substances-2 Credits
(This requirement only applies to licensees registered with the DEA and authorized to prescribe controlled substances;DOES NOT have to be live; Only certain organizations are allowed to hold this course. The Medical Society will offer this course free to all members. Please contact us for the date.)

  • You must complete 40 total continuing medical education hours, including the required hours above.
  • 20  continuing medical education hours must be AOA Category 1-A hours;  these hours may include any required course above if the required course  is certified in Category 1-A by the AOA.
  • You may only complete 8 total home-study hours to satisfy renewal requirements (see Home Study Hours, below).
  • No more than 6 hours of CME credit can be used per biennium for attendance at a board meeting.

Other CME requirements:
Domestic Violence – 2 hour CME every 3rd biennium renewal (can be distance learning)

For D.P.M.'s

Continuing Education (CE) Requirements: 

General Hours-36 Up to eight (8) hours per biennium is allowed for home study course. 

Prevention of Medical Errors-2 Credits

FL Laws and Rules-1 Credit

Risk Management-1  Credit

Controlled Substance Prescribing Course-2 Credits (Required for Podiatric Physicians who are registered with the United States DEA. Must complete prior to January 31, 2019 and each subsequent renewal; Only certain organizations are allowed to hold this course. The Medical Society will offer this course free to all members. Please contact us for the date.)

 

First Biennium Renewal:  Podiatric Physicians initially licensed in the biennium or within 24 months of  initial licensure must attend one (1) full day at a Florida Board of Podiatric Medicine meeting at which disciplinary hearings are conducted  as provided in subsection 64B18-17.005, F.A.C.

Podiatric Physicians initially licensed and are renewing a license for the first  time are required to complete two (2) hours of prevention of medical  errors and one (1) hour of HIV/AIDS
